Remember that when you enter sleep paralysis you should try to imagine your dream surroundings. Think of the place that you want to find yourself in. If that doesn't work, then what I would do is just wait until the dream naturally starts. Good luck! ;)

Well I've drank tea before bed and had some lucid dreams. So I guess coffee should have the same effect. Well anything with caffine (candy,soda,coffee,tea etc) should help.

Is it absolutley necessary to have a dream journal?

I've always wondered if it's necessary to have a dream journal. Ofcourse it can / will help with getting lucid dreams but whenever I start a dream journal I always get lazy. I am motivated but I just can't keep a dream journal.

I guess you had an OBE, but then it turned into a LD. Although I'm not that sure, don't really know about OBEs. :P
