Re: The Shocking Truth

I was thinking about this forum recently and wanted to check in, even though I don't have time to catch with all the reading. I've been way too busy with university (double-majoring in Mathematics and Pre-Med) for forum activity, but I miss you guys and miss our discussions! So how's everyone been? :D

Re: The Illusion of Free Will?

I agree and that's my take, too. I don't know if you listened to the recent discussion between Harris and Dennett but it was definitely more civilised. Of course Dennett agrees with Harris that the Libertarian free will does not exist. It seems to me that they mostly differed in semantics. What I l...

Re: Adapted MILD technique using floatation

Peter, having experience with sensory deprivation tanks, to what degree would you say a bathtub would work as a substitute?

Re: The Shocking Truth

The universe is a single event without purpose as far a we can tell. The very idea of purpose is incoherent on the cosmic level, to me. I apologise for the mawkishly bad poetry ... I love it! Zeno's Paradox is a philosophical quixotism produced by a source that nature often contradicts or exceeds: ...

Re: The Shocking Truth

Experiencing "Ego Death" in a lucid dream is a goal of mine. Mine too. The short-cut--imbibing psychedelics--is perhaps more dangerous than the long road of lucid dreaming, but tempting nonetheless. I wouldn't even seek to prove the latter because I don't believe it. The former, I simply ...

Re: Mudvayne

That's a good one; definitely their most popular song. My favorite song of theirs at the moment is "Wherein Lies Continue," especially the first minute or so. Pure gold. :P

Re: Adapted MILD technique using floatation

This is something I've never really thought of in relation to lucid dreaming. I think people have discussed on this forum the idea of a sensory deprivation tank, but no one has really connected it to WILD or MILD or the phase state between reality and unconsciousness. This was a fascinating treatise...

Re: The Shocking Truth

I think that, the other day, I experienced the moment without any linguistic conceptualization. After about 30 minutes of mindfulness meditation, I was genuinely looking into the world as though I didn't know any language. Things were reduced to their essences, bloated gleaming objects without any p...

Re: The Marriage Between Language and Instinct

I imagine they'd have the same level of reception which requires guidance somewhere down the line as they are error-prone. If, for instance, they perceive that most past tense verbs end in 'ed', they might assume that it's 'goed' until they learn 'went'. Perhaps it's similar with mathematics. You’r...

Re: Homosexuality: Genetic or a personal preference?

I think one aspect of this issue we haven’t fleshed out is that, while certainly there are biological factors that contribute to homosexuality, it doesn’t necessarily follow that every homosexual is a product of biological factors. Someone may simply have an extraordinarily open mind, a willingness ...
