Having a regular sleep schedule and then adjusting it a bit to allow more sleep does help a lot. It's the basic idea behind the CAT method (Cycle Adjustment Technique). That final dream you have will be at a time when you are already rested and feeling quite awake and aware, so there's a much higher change of realizing that you are dreaming. Those last dreams of the night tend to be the most vivid too!
