there are many things you can do like http://www.world-of-lucid-dreaming.com/15-foods-that-enhance-your-dreams.html or planting lucid dreaming intentions into your subconscious. you can learn a lot of helpful basics by subscribing to rebecca's free e-course, right here:

I would suggest reading lucid dreaming techniques over here: http://www.world-of-lucid-dreaming.com/lucid-dreaming-techniques.html. As you want to do something before bed, you should try MILD, WILD, or self-hypnosis. There's also a technique called B-MILD.
Do a reality check.

My fist lucid dream will be awesome!

You could look up chakra points and try to bring in white divine light in throu your crown and flow it to each chakra point to energize them. I find that useful in bringing in some vivid experiences including LDs during the night. (this seems to increase night time awareness). warning.. doing that too much can bring on insomina.

or meditating till body and mind is relaxed and then trying to WILD can be a good thing to do before bed.
The only thing to fear is the fear itself
