Help! Son referred to psych for hearing noises when falling asleep

Postby Sleepyson » 20 Feb 2019 20:00

Hi all. My son is 8. For the past 6 weeks or so, my son has been hearing noises (auditory hallucinations) while falling asleep (3-5 times/week). He gets extremely distressed and cries and says he is afraid the sound will come back. He is hearing what I might describe as ‘white noise’ like a ‘huhhuhhuhhuh’ or clicking or similar sounds. Several times he has also heard ‘voices’ - a deep weird voice and a creepy voice. They say 1-2 words to him. They don’t tell him to do anything, but he heard them in his head, along with the white noise. He can’t accurately tell me how long these episodes last. But they keep him from falling asleep.

My son has abdominal migraines (migraines but only with stomach involvement - Vomiting, stomach pain, etc). I thought maybe his abdominal migraines were morphing into normal migraines, causing these auditory hallucinations (this often occurs at puberty). But the neuro says it’s not migraines because he has no pain or other symptoms with it. She gave us an urgent referral to see a psychiatrist, due to the voices/noises.

So here I am - is this Exploding Head Syndrome? Something similar? How normal is hearing voices with exploding head syndrome? And how long does an episode of EHS last? What I read says it only lasts several seconds but my son experiences these noises for much longer (at least 5 minutes). Can they actually be longer? The idea that my son has developed sudden psychosis is terrifying. We have no family history of this type of mental health issue. However, my son has suffered from insomnia (takes him hours to fall asleep but stays asleep once he is out) since his abdominal migraines began at age 6.

Thank you so much in advance for any help/advice!!

I am not a specialist, but for me this sounds like hypnagogic hallucinations. Many people experience it before they fall asleep and it is natural. It can occur as hearing some voices, or seeing some images and patterns with your eyes closed, even the feeling of moving or flying. It's not dangerous, hearing voices in hypnagogia isn't anything unusual, even when they say something creepy or weird. There is probably nothing to worry about, but visit a psychiatrist to be sure, I am not a doctor.

I agree with Mirach. Last night someone shouted Erich. My thought was Good I am going into dreaming, and a bit latter I was flying just a bit up over a green landscape. I said to myself OK lets take over. I ask to fly higher which I did enjoying the scenery.
My present Mantra: I am awake, While my Body sleeps. Is working for me, but I am not to old (87) to change if I think I should give a new Mantra a try. :)
