the only thing i can relate this to is a mix of lucid dreaming and sleep paralysis.
I dont know if this would work easier or not but I suggest to try this next time as its how one breaks a sleep paralyses state and maybe it would help your physical body to move or twitch so you can like find yourself in it easier. Next time focus hard on wiggling your physical bodies toe (yeah I know you wouldnt know where it is if you are stuck in a dream but think about it and just try to do so). Maybe it would move and help break your state... I just know when one is paralysed in ones sleep, it is harder to break that by trying to move the whole body at once.
