Hindu Cosmology/Yuga Cycles

Postby son of shennong » 18 Apr 2015 17:37

Anyone who cares to discuss this topic is welcome to post w facts, opinions, questions, how it relates to dreams, LD, OBEs etc.

I'd post some of my thoughts, specifically whether we're heading deeper into Kali Yuga or have begun entering Dwarpa Yuga, except I've got another project & have to get on it.

Ok, I have a little time 2day so I'll post some info & Yuga cycles & then my thoughts on where we're headed.
In order to understand Yuga cycles, you have to 1st acquaint yourself w the notion of cyclical time vs linear time.

Cyclical time implies just that. Time's repetative, tho not exactly the same each time it occurs, & the grand cycle can be divided into different Ages, some advanced & quite spiritual, others barbaric & exhibiting very little spirituality. The other ages are somewhat in between, depending on whether we're climbing out of a bad Yuga or descending from a good one.

Not so sure of the repetitive factor w Greco/Roman culture, but u do have the ages of Man

JudeoChristian & Islamic culture see time as linear. It can only move in one direction - forward.

But for the purpose of this post, as evidenced by its title, I'll stick w the Vedas.
The Vedas propose 4 Yugas - Satya, Tretya, Dwarpa, & Kali. Satya's the Golden Age, Kali's the Dark Age, Tretya & Dwarpa are in between.

"Most interpreters of Hindu scriptures believe that Earth is currently in Kali Yuga." - wikipedia quote

An alternative view was presented @ the end of the 19th century by Sri Yukteswar, the Guru of Paramahansa Yogananda, who wrote, "Autobiography of a Yogi," which is a very cool book. Anyway in a book he wrote, "The Holy Science," Sri Yukteswar advanced the notion we are climbing out of Kali Yuga, as evidenced by scientific & technological advancement, increased communication between different peoples, greater tolerance, etc.

Altho a minority viewpoint, I tend to side w Sri Yukteswar in this debate, not that you'll see people arguing about it on CNN anytime soon. I look @ the world & see more evidence that we as a humanity are moving toward something greater rather than something worse, Fukashima & nuclear arms nonwithstanding.

Any takers one way or the othe on this subject?
Not checking for typos in this one. Sorry.
