I will keep it short. When I was living alone as a 23 year old female, I would fear nightmares. Luckily I didnt have too many. One night I did. It was of my father standing behind the door with a knife. I woke up screaming and sweating.
I told myself that I will wake myself up next time I have or start to have a nightmare. Slowly but surely it worked. Every time I felt frightened, I would wake myself up, remember the dream and tell myself to stop.
I usually sit back and let my mind dream on its own terms unless there's something that freaks me out.
Now that I know it's called Lucid dreaming and I can further educate myself. So thrilled!
