Hello everyone, I have some questions about lucid dreaming. My case is a little different than most I think, as I have a sleeping disorder called Narcolepsy. To start off, I'd like to mention where I think I may be a little different than most.

Number one: I have been lucid dreaming since I was a child, until recently (I'm 21 now) I had no idea that there was even a name for what my dreams were, but here we are. I think that the reason I started doing it so quickly is because of Narcolepsy, which causes the mind to skip the normal phases of sleep and go straight into REM sleep, rather than follow the proper order of things.

Number two: I lucid dream every time I go to sleep. Whether it be going to bed at night, a 5-10 minute nap, doesn't matter, I am always lucid. And since I usually do not sleep for over an hour at a time (part of the disorder I guess, REM sleep is the only kind of sleep I am able to get and only lasts 60-90 minutes usually or something like that) this means I have a few of them a day. Perhaps this affects my control over them? I am not sure.

Now, I always had a great degree of control over my dreams when I was young and going through high school and all. But as I have been getting older, my control has been declining. Now my dreams are borderline chaotic. I have slight control every now and then, but it seems that things either play out in a chaotic, random fashion, or when I try to control things, my dream seems to create things or act in a direct counter to my desires. I have so many questions, but I'm not sure what all is allowed to be talked about on this forum, and my dreams (like any I would think) can often take odd or inappropriate turns. Anyway, I really need some help understanding and regaining control of these dreams, because since I have them every time I go to sleep, I often wake up frustrated, angry, or frightened, depending on how the dream goes. Can anyone help me out?

I can relate to your reply or post 100% I too have been having them since I was a child and night tired when I was younger as have my children it was always when entering that first stage of sleep about an hour after going to bed . One thing that really affects bringing them on is eating before I go to bed going back to sleep in the mornings on the weekends and when I’m sleeping in an unfamiliar place . it’s not just the lucid dreaming part it’s having certain dreams my entire life whenever certain things are going on in my life for me I have a tornado dream whenever I’m stressed or things are uncertain in my future . The one thing that blows my mind after reading a bit about dreaming is that doctors have no idea why narcolepsy is related to people who lucid dream why don’t you just ask them because anybody will tell you it’s like waking up as if you never slapped you wake up exhausted you wake up from dreams so emotional you can’t shake it for the rest of your day. One thing I found is I can fall back to sleep and let myself go back into that dream and it seems to bring about a more restful sleep by allowing myself to do that . One thing I’ve always done is kind of make my bed my sanctuary like as if it was from an IKEA store and someplace that I can crawl into you and feel very safe comfortable like a warm bath and it truly helps me sleep better . this might sound like it’s from my field but I think it really makes sense I had a terrible stomach my whole life and the last few years I’ve learned it was due to gluten cutting out of my diet made me feel so much better and I think that I’m comfortable restlessness in my sleep was caused due to my health . If you have kids they have no doubt at some point had pinworms and one of them number one signs is restless sleep where they scream out a lot and it’s due to them being uncomfortable so it makes sense as to why my sleep has improved with changing my diet .
